The charter of this journal is to help me reflect on interesting life experiences that I have had without being mean to people I know. Note that it is not permitted for corporations (or their representatives) to access this diary. Only people, not associated with any coorporation (while they are reading this), are allowed to read or refer to this diary. Coorporations are not people; failure to understand this fact will give you mental health problems. Go look out for your own self interest without the help of a fictitituous person(i.e. coorporation) to take responsibility for your actions. Also, by reading this journal you agree to have wild catholic liberal sex with President Bush.
Hey! Its almost 2003!
As many of you know my program of strapping an IRAQI baby to every single nuclear missile is an unqualified success! Congratulations everyone for your hard work! We are not going to do it! P.S. I'm single (Seriously). Send me an email if you want a date by filling out the form on this page. Don't forget to include your email.
Another year has come and gone and Santa's getting fatter.
He's an old man you see, which means he shrinks in height. But his stomach is expanding because of this shrinking due to the theory of relativity and due to him being a fat pig and all. I don't mean to dis Santa. He could be used as a valuable meal for 25 ethiopeans. Ho Ho Ho! Add more pepper!
Would you like to know all about the mythical man meat?
Hey everyone, check it out! A new diary entry! woohoo! I almost bought a condo last couple of months, but I decided not to, for some stupid reason. I'm going to try not blaming things and other people for any perceived lack of motivation on my part. I also rediscovered the library a couple of months ago. I used to be a really big library fan like 8 years ago, but then I got money. Now, the novelty of money has worn off, and I'm back to pacing my life on my terms.
I should let people update this page in real time. I don't mean as in a BBS, I mean, they can just post like 160 characters or something next to each entry. For example:
MalcomX: Lay off the crack, whitey.
Well, its been almost a month since I have posted to this thing. I notice people keep on visting it anyway, so I'd better write something. Well do I talk about the usual stuff? Work, play, social life? naaah. I was just thinking that it would be nice to be free to do whatever I want. All it would take is the realization that I am free to do whatever I want. What a hard path to follow, though. And after I was free to do whatever I wanted. Would I be free to stop?
Live long and prosper. Grow old and wise. Die young and happy.
well, I biked to work twice in the last 3 days.
This diary thing is kind of stupid. Why do people keep diaries again? And why would they keep public diaries? Hmm... something fishy here.
I wonder why people like the movies that they like? Some people complain a lot about plot. Others are into violent enterntainment. Other people want drama. Me; I just what to take in the experience. I usually never compain much about anything :P
Hope you are having fun!
Well its been a very busy week, and it looks like its gonna
get even busier. Softball, Tennis, Dates, Bike riding, Canoeing,
And who is the moron who is going to make me get up at 4:30 AM to go canoeing next saturday?
My collection of humor is getting bigger. Perhaps I should try to put it in strategic points at my site instead of burying it in the humor section.
This letter was sent in response to Dr. Laura's claim that
homosexuality is an abomination because it's against the Bible...
Dear Dr. Laura,
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding
God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to
share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone
tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply
remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an
abomination..... End of debate !
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some
of specific law and how to best follow them as a true believer.
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates
a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors.
They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in
Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair
price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in
her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem
is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are
around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans
but not Canadians. Can you clarify?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2
clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to
kill him myself?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination (Lev. 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than
homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
Lev. 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if
I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear
prescription glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is
there some wiggle room here?
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident
that you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word
is eternal and unchanging.
Well, its been a busy week. My LAN, firewall, ssh and my web
server are up and running. Yippe! I'm so great!
I guess there is not end to the amount of messing I can do with my Linux firewall.
Once I get my paws on diablo 2, i won't be worried about any sissy configuration stuff, though :) That game is going to rock.
I've started trolling on slashdot. Its great fun. The troll stuff is some of the most enterntaining stuff there. I highly recommend it.
I was explaining to this girl what she needs to learn to do if she wants t live in NY:
1) rat training (just live in the subway for a couple of days)
2) how to find hot air vents
3) how to completely ignore naked people right in front of you
4) how to cross the street if the group up ahead looks suspicious
5) remember -- always play chicken with cars, 3000 consecutive wins for me
6) you also gotta get in a little better shape so you can run away from people trying to stab you with syringes
I wonder how long it's going to take for me to start taking romantic leads from people with kids?
I figured out how to set up my linux box so that it runs a firewall for my internal LAN. Its kindof cool. I understand a lot more about networks now. I guess nothing much interesting has happened lately. I'm having a fair amount of fun at work How about you? Are you important? Are you docile? Are you docile and important? OK time for another poem, I guess.
time is passing softly by
tick tick goes the clock
the waves lap the shore
the light shines brightly into the car mirror
smaller and smaller become the silences
how do you feel just standing there?
Finally got my cable modem today. Now I have web access! I was kind of enjoying having to learn how to entertain myself. I was learning to walk around and to talk to people. It was really fun. Oh well, back to staring at the boob tubes. Looking for fun sites? try www.stickdeath.com and www.stinkymeat.net.
I think I want to become a minister. I don't really have the time to believe in FISH myself, but I want to have the right to enforce my beliefs on other people. I think the 4 commendments are sorely neglected in our education. "Thou shall whine a lot" said FISH. I don't see nearly enough whiners out there. After all, if we were morally corrupt wouldn't we be satisifed with our lives?
Here is a poem:
when I was a little boy, I wanted to be a boy
when I was a man, I wanted to be a man
now that I'm an ass, i want to be an ass
what will I be when I don't want to be who I am?
Government proposes plan to break Elian in two! Unions deny that they don't like workers that work for cheap! The Supreme court decides that they control the primaries!
I have this mechanical mouse on my desk. I also have this mechanical scorpion. The mouse kicks the scorpions ass all the time. This is symbolic of the workers struggle to overcome evil capitalist tendencies. donut is to cop as pork is to [arab, jew, christian, asian]?
Bought some more Groo comic books today. Groo is pretty funny. I don't quite know why I like it so much, but I do!
That Simpsons cartoon where Marge gets Itchy and Scratchy to stop having violence and so all the kids yawn and go outside and start doing cool stuff, is really funny. I wish that would happen for real. Our society is basically highly mobile trailer trash. Except that people who live in trailers probably have a better view. I'm in a box at work and I'm in a box at home. Gee, I'm so special.
Why is it that when you smack someone with a fish they get offended? Is it the rotting smell or the gross physical assault itself? Its probably the fishy affront to their dignity.
There are a couple of ways I can think of that corporate power structures work. Power of control of format. Power of good will. Power of fear (which is only vailid if the victim feels fear). Power of greed. Power of lie/information interpretation. Power of logic. Power of apathy.
Hey! Who left the grey stuff in my parking lot today (20, to be exact). No littering! Yes, I work for one of those companies. No, its not run by your grandpa. No I didn't get one. But it was close enough so I could feel the lightning bolt sizzle.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could be somebody.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could say hello
Smiling and laughing while walking down the street
No place to go and loving it
If you worry, If you cry, If you hurt and If you lie
would it matter if there was no one to listen to you?
So take a breather and relax,
don't send an email or a fax
put up your feet and burp out loud
smile and make your ego proud
I played volleyball at lunch today. Jeez, I suck. Actually I'm not that bad compared to the people that were there but I was so tired! With practice I could easily be as good as anyone there.
I wonder how my interests will change as I get older? Will I care more about work or sex? Will I enjoy the company of people or books? Will I crave human contact or will I crave attention? Will I learn or will I just repeat the same mistakes again? Will I have a midlife crisis? WIll I get a sports car? Will I get a boat?
I suppose who I am will still only be important to the people that know me - my friends. After all, everything else is internal! :)
I saw a raven landing on a branch of a tree today. It was pretty cool. It was flying a couple of meters above the branch level, then it went into a quick dive to lose altitude, then it soared and landed on the branch. I wish I could do that :) There are always these pigeons sitting on high voltage power lines at work. I wonder if they are dead?
What is good manners? I think good manners is listening to what people are saying and assuming whatever problem they are having is real, even if you think its is not the probable cause of their immediate technical problem. Good manners is treating people the way you want to be treated. Good manners is going slowly.
Well, its been two weeks. It turns out that the cafeteria is absolutely fantastic. That place kicks ass. Cheap and absolutely gourmet. I'm really using my palm pilot now. That thing tells me what to do and when to do it :) Gonna get a computer for my mom in the next weeks. She can finally be on the web and send me annoying emails all the time. My favorite kind of mustard is horseradish mustard. K. Bye!
Well its been almost a week at my new job. I've managed to
swim pretty well. I feel good about my skills. The coworkers are
really really nice for the most part. They are just happy. Ask me
how much I appreciate that :) The atmosphere is kind of fun.
We'll see how it goes. There are a bunch of people there into
computer games. I have people to eat lunch with and take walks.
I added some more ideas to my voting page on how to fix our political system. I don't think I'm going to vote for Bush or Gore. I'd rather vote for someone I don't know about.
I think freedom is the most important spiritual quality to have. To not be constrained by artificial logic/structure imposed by the mental blocks of the people you interact with. Be free! Do stupid stuff. My favorite examples of this is that I like to walk into doors on purpose. I don't totaly ignore the door - i.e. I don't hurt myself. However, I like to make a nice thud. That's freedom! :) Its amazing how much in the same way we do everyday things. Part of it is that we feel (and we are told) we need to follow a routine or a pattern to be productive. We falsely define productivity as producing the same thing over and over again - that must mean that we DO the same thing over and over again. Nonsense! True efficiency is never doing the same thing twice! True efficiency is being lazy by solving the problem permanently. Laziness is the cause and efficiency is the result. Human beings have an incredible capacity to learn and follow extremely exactly patterns of behaviour. What we can learn we can unlearn. If you find yourself automatically doing the "next step", stop and think. Are you sure you are climbing the right ladder?
Overall, I think, I am happy with my life. Things are missing, but I can find them and put them in the right place. I pursue happiness and it chases me in return.
I dropped an airborne express package into a fedex drop box
today. Doh! Doh! Doh! So I called up the fed ex guy and he is
like: "Don't worry it happens all the time. The driver will
just put it into the right box". I'll call tomorrow and make
I had a discussion with my friend about materialism the other day. We talked about collecting money and collecting stuff. If you don't spend what you collect then it is just like collecting abstract objects. That's sad. Things should be used. Anyway, despite increasing my salary, I seem to have him convinced that I am not materialistic/focused on money. Good job on my part, huh? :)
On a side issue, I can't resist adding that every manager in big companies always says to their young employees: "If it's just about the money you should leave". That seems to be the most popular tactic I know to inspire complacency which is the prime quality that companies that want to make a profit off their employees and not their customers look for (most defense companies would qualify, I think). The fact that new employees have to make more than employees that are already there (in being there it is assumed that one is complacent and accepts whatever the corporate line of the day is) is so striking a fact that it just has to be completely ignored and denied by everyone.
I read this story a couple of months (in www.eet.com, I think) ago about a 5 year HW/SW engineer making $45 (should be at least $65). Welcome to the real world buddy.
People of older generations don't understand that its not greed that drives the younger generation, but a sense of anti-corporate justice. Let McDonalds pay minimum wage. Let the other big companies charge their equivalent of minimum wage. Don't expect us to be confused as to who is the backbone with which you make your profits.
Anyway, my attitude is that you have to give your very best. Take into account your outside life, and try to change things if you think they have to be changed. If things don't work out then give your employer the benefit of the doubt and leave quietly. Hopefully you will be able to recognize and manage the situation in which a better life is elsewhere.
I had another couple of good ideas (yes, I think they are good ideas :)) about web sites today. How about local community sites that track food, housing, lifestyle quality. Why and where did you get sick? Why did you move? Where are the places to go? It was inspired by the Ralph Nader idea of adding .sucks (and other cool ones) as a domain name extension. Please let that happen, God! :)
This diary thing is harder then I thought. The problem is half
the time I don't do anything interesting. I suppose I could make
a story out of some small part of my life and practice my
storytelling skills by doing so.
I found a really good animal book (linux device drivers). It made me want to go out there and get a second linux HD so I can run linux ASAP. I am really looking forward to that.
I put like 20 todo items in my palm pilot today. I think organizing my life will make it much better. I've been pretty disorganized lately. I can really see the possibility for great benefit.
Cleaned up my apartment, looked for apts., efiled and telefiled my taxes today. Tomorrow I will think about taking a trip somewhere warm for the rest of the week.
I am trying to move soon. Will try to move within 5 minutes of work. That would be awesome. Might even be able to eat lunch at home, although new work seems to have good ameneties. Looking forward to my new job. I have 11+ big plastic storage crates full of books.
I start my new job on March 6. Isn't it nice to be a young person and to have a different job every 1 to 1.5 years. You can take vacation :) In silicon valley a person who works at a job for 2 years is called a tree hugger.
Offer was pretty good (more and better benefits). Place seems very professional and very fun. I hope nothing goes wrong.
I have some resolutions to make:
1) Write an article about being a young SW Eng and some of the
social/business dynamics that one encounters
2) Start puting up online book reviews of every book I read.
Life seems to have gotten better. Thank you to all my friends for moral support.
